New-look NewsNow
What happened to the old version of the site? Can I still use
it?
The old version of NewsNow is no longer available. If you
are having trouble using the new site, or have comments and
suggestions, please first read the overview of new features, and then
contact us.
Where is LiveFeed?
LiveFeed is not part of the new version of NewsNow.
Please use one of our high-quality newsfeeds instead, for instance Current Affairs.
General Questions
Can you publish my story? I heard a great
rumour recently
NewsNow is an online news aggregator. We don't write news ourselves;
instead, we scan the Internet for headlines and group them into convenient
categories to make it easier for you to find the news you want.
Can I link to your site?
Of course you can. The World Wide Web is made up of links, and anyone
who tells you that you can't link to their web site is talking rubbish. We
can even supply you with a NewsNow logo, if you ask nicely!
Is my favourite football player injured/suspended? Can I get his
autograph?
Please see answer to Q1 above. You might get all the football news
you'll ever need from NewsNow, but we don't have any official relationship
with any clubs.
What do the icons or mean next to this headline?
We occasionally add a site to NewsNow that requires users to register
(free) or subscribe (paid) to their service in order to read stories. We
mark headlines from these sites with either the icon
or .
If you click on the headline, you will be asked to register or subscribe before you can access the story.
Why have you sent me a virus/spam email?
In an effort to get past spam and anti-virus filters, many malicious and
unscrupulous emails are now sent with forged "From:" addresses. If you reply
to these emails, your replies come to us. We also receive many more bounced
emails. The only thing you can do about it is contact your local government
representative and ask them when your government is
going to pass anti-spam legislation.
Can I use your headlines on my site?
We have a number of paid services that allow you to use
our headlines on your site - please click here
to see how.
Q10. Why can't I search for more than one word at
a time?
A10. We have restricted the power of the search engine on the NewsNow site
so that we don't undercut the value of the services we charge for. If you
run a business and need time-critical news about your company, competitors,
products or industry, then for a small monthly fee you can unleash the full
power of NewsNow's search capabilities.
Web Site Questions
How does 'Recently read' work?
Every time you click on an article, details of the article,
including its headline, appear in the 'Recently read' box. The most recently
read article is at the top. You can click on the links in 'Recently read' if
you want to re-read an article. A maximum of ten articles is displayed. You can
reduce the number of articles displayed by clicking 'less'; to increase the
number displayed, click 'more'. Information on the articles you visited is
stored in a 'cookie' on your computer; you therefore need the 'cookies'
feature enabled in your browser (it is usually on by default) for 'Recently
read' to work.
Why doesn't your site work in my browser?
We can't promise to support all web browsers,
as unfortunately web standards support is a hopeless mess across the range
of available browsers. The site should however perform well in any of the
latest browsers from Microsoft, Netscape / Mozilla, Opera or the KDE Project,
on Windows, Macintosh and Linux (where supported). If you are using an older
browser, such as Netscape 4.x or Internet Explorer 3.x we strongly recommend
you upgrade, for the following reasons:
- Some old browsers contain bugs in their rendering of pages
- Older browsers often are no longer actively supported, meaning there
will be no new security fixes
- Older browsers do not render pages as well as the most recent versions.
Your web browsing experience will be enhanced by upgrading!
If after reading this you still have a problem accessing the site in your
browser, contact us.
Do you have RSS feeds of your news?
Not exactly. We can provide an RSS feed if you subscribe to one of our
paid services, but we don't provide free news via RSS.
Why is there an ad covering the news?
NewsNow does not normally include pop-ups, pop-unders, etc, except when they're from a reputable
advertiser. If you see such an ad, please make sure that it wasn't part
of a site that we link to, and appeared after you clicked on one of our
headlines. If you are sure it appeared on our site, then please tell us and
we may consider asking our advertising agency to remove it.
It doesn't work any more!
When reporting problems with the NewsNow site, please
choose the correct form to fill in to notify
us of the problem. Provide as much detail as you can, including the
exact text of any error messages.
If possible, attach a screen shot showing the problem happening. Using one of the
forms will also automatically inform us of your web browser version and operating
system.
Editorial Questions
I don't agree with the content of the this
particular newswire!
NewsNow doesn't write any of the news that appears on the NewsNow site,
and we don't exclude sites from NewsNow based on the content of their news.
If you don't agree with the views expressed by a particular site, you are
free to avoid reading their headlines. In the same way, if you don't agree
with the topic of a newswire, you can avoid reading that newswire. Our
editorial policy sets this out
in detail.
Can you add the stories from my favourite news
site?
We would be delighted. We are always keen to add new sources of
headlines to NewsNow. Please send us the home page URL of the site you wish
to be added.
We published a story on our site by mistake,
which is now on NewsNow! Can you take it down?
Of course. Please contact
us.
Can you please post my press release?
Please see answer to Q1 above. If you submit your press
release for distribution by sourcewire.com (for IT releases) or responsesource.com (for general press releases),
then it will be included in NewsNow's service. Note that all press
releases are marked as such on the NewsNow site (see our editorial policy).
Can I submit my web site for inclusion on
NewsNow?
Certainly, although we do have certain criteria. For more information,
see our Publisher Network page.
Where is news about my favourite topic?
NewsNow has roughly 650 newswires split into eleven top-level categories,
so it can sometimes be hard to find the newswire you are looking for.
However, if you are sure you can't find the topic you want, contact us and we'll add it as soon as we can. You can help us by supplying a
list of keywords and sources that are relevant to that topic.
Why are there irrelevant/outdated stories in
this newswire?
NewsNow's aggregation system is automated, which means that we don't
have people checking each story as it posted on the site. Sometimes a site
we are scanning undergoes a redesign, or the publisher posts old stories on
a page with new stories, which can lead to irrelevant stories appearing in
newswires. We try and catch these irregularities as soon as we see them, but
most of the time our users catch them first. If you do notice a mistake like
this, please tell us and we'll fix it immediately.
How are Top Stories determined?
The Top Stories are those stories from each newswire that have been
clicked on the most times in the last 24 hours, and which were
published in the last two days. This includes the stories in the Top
Stories section itself.
I can't access my favourite newswire any more!
Where has it gone?
We do occasionally move newswires from one menu to another, but it's
more likely that the newswire you were accessing has been removed due to a
lack of popularity. We continually monitor the popularity of our newswires,
and those that receive very few clicks each month tend to be dropped. If we
don't cover the same topic elsewhere, get in touch and we may be
persuaded to reinstate it.
Why are there stories about this player in my club's newswire - he left
last season!
It is very hard to keep up with the football transfer market! We do
sometimes keep news about old players in a club's newswire if they haven't
moved to a rival club, as some fans like to follow their old boys' progress.
However, in most cases it's usually just a mistake on our part, so please
get in touch and we'll change the newswire.
Why do I get a registration page when I click
on this link?
More and more sites are moving to a registration business model to try
and make money from their sites. When this happens, you may see a
message from the site asking you to register. If you tell us about this,
we'll change it so that in future, the icon (for
free-to-register sites) or (for pay-to-register sites) will
appear in red next to these headlines. Of course, once you register with the
site, any headlines you click on in future will take you straight to the story.
